Every child’s therapeutic journey is unique, but the overall process follows a supportive and consistent structure. Whether your child engages in child-centered play therapy or counselling, the steps are similar with space to tailor the approach to your child’s needs.
The Process
-
The journey begins with a parent/caregiver consultation (in-person or online). We’ll discuss your child’s needs, your concerns, and your goals, and complete any necessary paperwork. This helps us design a plan that feels right for your family and your child.
-
The first few sessions focus on building trust and safety. Your child explores the playroom and begins expressing themselves — either through free play (non-directive) or through playful, semi-structured activities (more directive counselling). After around session 5, we’ll check in with you to share initial observations and recommendations (while always respecting your child’s privacy).
-
As therapy continues, we’ll schedule regular updates with you to discuss your child’s progress, highlight emerging themes, and plan next steps together. Collaboration with families (and schools/support services if appropriate) helps ensure the best outcomes.
-
Over time, therapy deepens. Children may:
Explore emotions and experiences through play (non-directive).
Build coping, social, and problem-solving skills in semi-structured sessions.
Strengthen resilience, self-confidence, and relationships.
The number of sessions varies — some children benefit from a few months, while others may need longer-term support.
-
When your child shows consistent growth and you feel ready, we’ll plan a positive ending. This may include a final play or counselling session to celebrate their progress, and a parent meeting to reflect on the journey and discuss future support if needed.
